This volume contains 16 papers from an eponymous November 2007 conference concerned with the nature, dynamics, and consequences of Stalinism in Eastern and Central Europe. Looking over the broadly comparative works, editor Tismaneanu (politics, U. of Maryland) identifies four axes of analysis that characterize the volume: the heterogeneous nature of communization; the role of the "Moscow Center" in the interplay between sovietization and satellitization; the ambivalent symbiosis between continuity and change in the Soviet satellite states; and the logics of Stalinism's apparatus of control and its consequences and legacies in the region.
