Tolliver (English, Agnes Scott College) examines in detail American writer James' ideas about biographical form, and the two full-length biographies he wrote, Hawthorne (1879) and William Wemore Story and His Friends (1903). Though he offered no coherent, formal theory of the genre, he finds that in his criticism, letters, and fiction he wrote about biography from a core of aesthetic conviction that, when isolated, constitutes a kind of informal poetics.
