This text, designed to serve as an advanced undergraduate or graduate level text on steel heat treatment, is a revised version of 1997's Steel Heat Treatment Treatment Handbook, updated by Totten (visiting professor of materials science, Portland State U.) and his contributors to cover advances in the field. Approximately a third of the chapters address entirely new topics, including classification and mechanisms of steel transformations, distortion of heat-treated components, tool steels, stainless steel heat treatment, and heat treatment of powder metallurgy steel components. Another third of the book--the chapters on steel nomenclature; heat treatment with gaseous atmospheres; nitriding techniques, quenching and quenching technology; and ferritic nitrocarburizing, and austenitic nitrocarburizing techniques and methods--have undergone extensive revision. Only minor revisions have been made to the remaining contributions, which cover fundamental concepts in heat treatment, effects of alloying elements on the heat treatment of steel, hardenability, annealing processes, hardening by formation of martensite, and hardening and tempering of structural steels.
