Now that upper-division undergraduate courses in quantum mechanics are finally doing justice to the subject, says Townsend (physics, Harvey Mudd College) it is shameful that lower-division introductory physics classes--which should be preparing students for the improved road ahead of them--continue to be historical surveys of a century now past. Students should learn the fundamentals of quantum mechanics through real experiments that reflect the current state of the science, he contends, and provides a textbook to that end. His topics include the time-independent Schrödinger equation, quantum mechanics in three dimensions, nuclear physics, and particle physics.
