Asserting that any poet's mode of allusion reveals his poetry's relationship to other poetry, van Tress (classical languages, Radboud U. Nijmegen) explores Callimachus' allusive practice in the Aetia prologue and Hymns 4, 5, and 6, and Ovid's practice in Metamorphoses. The study includes an overview of modern approaches to poetic allusion and examinations of the lexical allusions in the prologues of Aetia and Metamorphoses. The final chapter considers the relationship between allusion and genre, particularly the way both poets use allusive types to authenticate and differentiate their tales.
