The puns are delicious, and apparently so are the subjects. Turpin (entomology, Purdue U.), founder of the famous "Bug Bowl," in which the aforesaid critters pull tractors and serve as both appetizer and entrée, notes that bugs have been on earth about 350 times longer than humans. He explores the relationships between them, including the service of bugs in medicine (maggots, anyone?) and the propensity of the humans to keep bugs as pets, then follows with short observations neatly arrayed as lepidoptera (why a moth is not a butterfly), hymenoptera (dancing bees, picnicking ants and talented hornets), diptera (deer flies are not dear flies), and various homoptera, isoptera and even an orthoptera or two. He offers a collection on insect biology (some are schizophrenic but good at striptease) and another on ecology. The result is accessible, informative, and just slightly crunchy.
