Writing for a general audience, Tyler (a retired music professor from Central Florida Community College) profiles American popular music form 1945 to 1959. Largely focusing on music that achieved success on the charts, he spends most of the text describing the various songs that made it onto the charts, adding details about the songs content and reception and, often, biographical information about the song's producers or performers. Instead of approaching the topic strictly chronologically, he divides the material into genres.
