The first half of this work is a standard memoir of Uhl's time as an American soldier in the Vietnam War, in which he describes his growing aversion to the military and opposition to the war. The second half doesn't abandon memoir entirely, as it deals with Uhl's involvement in the anti-war veterans' movement, but it does expand the scope away from the immediate first person in order to provide a "micro-historical" study of the New Left's political culture as evidenced by the activities and lifestyles of the Citizens' Commission of Inquiry on US War Crimes in Vietnam, to which Uhl belonged.
