Research on synthetic emotions and social robots can help develop better computer applications, and can help neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists test their models. It can also lead us to rethink classical philosophical problems. International research collected here focuses on the integration of emotions into artificial environments such as computers and robotics. Chapters on recognizing emotions look at topics including automatic detection of emotion in music, and facial expression analysis. Work on emotional social robots is described in material on multirobot team work with benevolent characters, and affective goal and task selection for social robots. Some philosophical questions addressed include the motivational problem for autonomous cognitive systems, and personality and emotions in robotics from the gender perspective. Work on modeling emotions investigates artificial surprise, a theory of language based on natural language semantics, and an emotional perspective for agent-based computational economics. Applications of artificial emotions in computer-based learning environments and emotional memory are described. A final section on ambient emotion touches on emotional ambient media, and modeling hardwired synthetic emotion.
