In a postscript to this English translation of his work, Vandenberghe (sociology, Institutio Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro) notes slight variations in his conclusions to this study of the major trends in German sociology over the past two hundred years. However, his major points on the work of Marx, Simmel, Weber, Lukás, Horkheimer, Adorno and Habermas remain unchanged. He subjects this development of sociological theory to his own metacritique, stating that most theories of reification stem from a misunderstanding that reification is a narrowing path. Vendenberghe posits a view of a "gradual and preemptive crystallization of the space of possibilities". (p. 17) By viewing sociology through the lens of philosophy, Vandenberghe takes a new look at the major influences in modern sociology, from the classical stage, through the Frankfurt School to the recent work of Habermas. He closes his revisions by replacing the theory of reification "within a critical realist theory of society." Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
