This anthology presents 11 essays and 4 poems by Latinas of African descent, offering insight on their personal experiences of forging and claiming identity in the face of oppression and racism. Contributors are political, human rights, feminist, and community activists, including a psychologist, several novelists and musicians, a political scientist, and a professor of sociology. Challenging Eurocentric constructions of Latin American identity and US-centered constructions of black identity, they write of experiences that led them to challenge inequality and become advocates for women and people of color.
