Today, people are rediscovering the advantages of bamboo, one of the world's key construction materials. Not only is it cheap and enduring, but also has an unmistakable aesthetic appeal and in terms of inner structure astonishingly enough resembles many high-tech compounds. The present volume is the first book to present both the historical significance of bamboo and many different aspects of bamboo together with a wealth of pictorial material and scholarly texts.
The focus is on the work of Simon Velez, who comes from Colombia and is the most renowned contemporary architect working with bamboo. Alongside Velez's oeuvre, the book offers exhaustive documentation on the pinnacle of his work to date, namely the ZERI pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hanover. And the volume also reminds the reader that architects such as Buckminster Fuller, Frei Otto, Renzo Piano, Shoei Yoh or Arata Isozaki have experimented with bamboo.
With essays by Jean Dethier, Walter Liese, Eda Schaur, Frei Otto, and Mateo Kries.
