She argues that the videos derive from the songs they set: the song is produced first, the director normally designs images with the sung as a guide, and the point of the video is to sell the song. After discussing such aspects of theory as the function of narrative, actors, settings, lyrics, and musical parameters, she analyzes music videos of Madonna, Prince, and Peter Gabriel.
