The great Anglo-Saxon epic, Beowulf, has been studied for generations and translated many times. However there are still parts of the poem that puzzle scholars and individual words and phrases that defy easy translation. Vickrey (English, Lehigh University emeritus) has spent his professional career working with Beowulf and other Old English texts. In this study, he returns to a topic that has intrigued him for years, the "minor" episodes of the poem that most scholars have assumed were based on historical events. The Finn section was the beginning of his interest, but the Grendelkin and Daegclassn episodes are also considered. Vickrey posits that these historical sections are actually imbued with Scandinavian mythic themes and symbols. His argument is that the original audience would have recognized the sources and incorporated the earlier meanings into their understanding of the poem. Not all scholars in the field will agree with this but Vickrey's erudite explanations should convince them to reconsider their assumptions. Distributed by Associated University Presses.
