During the Second World War, almost 20 million people were forced laborers for Nazi Germany--about one-third of them in POW and concentration camps and most of the rest working in industry, agriculture, and administration for private companies and public agencies. Unlike previous works on forced labor under the Third Reich, this book relies heavily on the personal memories of people who were forced to work for the Nazi regime in 27 different countries, paying particular attention to how these former forced laborers came to terms with their situations and to how they "fit" this period of their lives into their personal biographies. Sections of the book contain individual country accounts, examine transnational themes, and provide resources for use in future research into forced labor during the Second World War.
