Thadden (emeritus, history, Göttingen U., Germany) traces the history of the Pomeranian village of Trieglaff, in what is now western Poland, over five generations. The analysis of the society, economy, politics, and culture draws mostly on the archives of the von Thadden family, whose mansion dominates the village, but other material comes from descendants of emigrants in Wisconsin, including correspondence with family members who remained. He covers the founding generation, Prussia becomes Germany, feelers toward the liberals, modernization within traditions, paths at the close of the old era 1912-22, into the abyss 1923-45, and the last German generation.
