Built upon 132 years of documentation, this study demonstrates how policies and practices initiated in the 1970s in a portion of this magnificent national park have worked to its detriment. Wagner (forest, range and wildlife sciences emeritus, Utah State U.) has focused on the ecology of natural systems and its application to management for decades, and he tracks elk population changes from prehistory onward to the first evidence compiled in the late 1870s and thence to 2003, supplying a trajectory for what will likely become of the herd. He describes the effects of elk on ecostructure and function, including aspen woodland, the sagebrush steppes, and areas of conifer and deciduous shrubs, with further descriptions including riparian system structure, erosion, bioenergetics and nitrogen biochemistry. He closes with commentary on why science missed the mark in managing the herds, and how in the future science can accurately inform policy.
