Wake (Latin American cultural studies, Birkbeck College, U. of London, UK) explores how Christian churches built during the early colonial era in sixteenth-century Mexico also reflected the beliefs of the indigenous communities that built them, looking at how the art and architecture of these churches (shown in b&w illustrations and color plates) were perceived by native peoples and how they came to relate to the religion they understood it to represent. She describes the ways that native builders, stonemasons, painters, and sculptors perceived the art and architecture of Europe and how they reproduced it, as an act of "reframing," considering religious sculpture and painting, iconography, cartography, and devotional poetry from the Cantares mexicanos and Romances de los señores de la Nueva España series. The book is based on her doctoral dissertation. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
