Walwik (history, Dakota State U.) offers an experiment based on Benjamin Franklin's plan for moral perfection, a set of 13 virtues for individuals to cultivate to become successful in their personal, public, and political lives. The author pairs each of the virtues with an American president to explore if living by Franklin's plan truly can result in a successful life, such as enhanced wealth or reputation. The pairings offer examples of both success and failure. Readers may greet some of the pairings with a snicker, but by offering them in the context of the times in which the selected presidents lived and worked, they generate truly interesting observations. Some of the pairings are: resolution and Abraham Lincoln, chastity and Bill Clinton, and frugality and Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton Books is an imprint of University Press of America.
