The Chinese city of Chengdu is examined through the perspective of its teahouses, which were often the cultural, political and social centers of everyday life. Wang (Texas A&M U.) looks at the first half of the 20th century to show parallels between Chinese culture and social interactions in these public settings--an alignment reflected in the oft-quoted saying, "A teahouse is a little Chengdu and Chengdu is a big teahouse." The study is arranged in sections on the teahouse in its commercial, social and entertainment, and political contexts, with a conclusion on the "triumph of small business and everyday culture," and an appendix comparing tea and rice prices, 1909-1948. B&w photos and illustrations support the text. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
