For Wang (mechanical engineering, Louisiana State U.) and Soper (chemistry, Louisiana State U.), the most exciting developments in the application of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have been in the areas of biology and biomedicine. Aiming for an audience of industrial engineers and academic researchers in the sciences and engineering, they present 16 papers that discuss recent advances and applications in bio-MEMS technology. The volume opens with four papers discussing basic bio-MEMS fabrication technologies, including a process for high-aspect-ratio microstructures in polymers, metals, and ceramics; nanoimprinting technology for biological applications; and hot embossing for lab-on-a-chip applications. Microfluidic devices and components for bio-MEMS are then discussed, including micropumps, micromixers, devices for microflow cytometry, and devices for sample processing extraction and concentrations. The last seven contributions explore sensing technologies, specifically exploring coupling electrochemical detection with microchip capillary electrophoresis, culture-based biochip for rapid detection of environmental mycobacteria, MEMS for drug delivery, microchip capillary electrophoresis systems for DNA analysis, devices for proteomics, single-cell and single-molecule analyses using microfluidics, and pharmaceutical analysis using bio-MEMS.
