Watkins (African American studies, Western Illinois U.) examines the experiences of five African-American females in a large, urban Midwestern city enrolled in a workplace speech and language training program, in which they learned Standard English dialect, led by the author. She aims to understand how they negotiated effects of race, class, and gender discrimination in educational experiences in and out of school in the past and present, as well as their views about the role of teachers and schools, job advancement, and work ethic. She draws from their personal stories from conversational interviews she conducted from 1994 to 1995, where they talked about the lessons learned at home, in school, and at work. She also discusses the debate surrounding Black English and education through religion. The book began as Watkins' dissertation. It can be used for courses in Africa-American studies, women's studies, ethnic studies, history, multicultural education, sociolonguistics, communication, and religion.
