Writing for non-chemists, Weiner (chemistry, emeritus, University of Denver) explains key concepts in environmental chemistry, sets out the necessary calculations for applying them, and shows how to interpret the significance of water quality data. Self-contained chapters offer a framework for finding data tables that are ordinarily scattered throughout the literature. The book also contains EPA water use classifications and describes treatment methods for industrial, municipal, and agricultural waste discharges. Worked examples provide step-by-step instructions for frequently used calculations, drawing on case histories from real-world environmental applications. This second edition includes a new section on environmental forensics, and a new chapter on radionuclides, with reorganized material in separate chapters on metals, light nonaqueous phase liquids, dense nonaqueous phase liquids, and biodegradation. Chapter exercises have also been added. The former appendices on drinking water standards, water quality criteria, and sample collection protocols have been omitted because these data are continually changing and are readily available on the Internet. The book can be used for self-study or for short courses on the movement and fate of contaminants in the environment. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
