Weisblum describes interpretive approaches of the two pillars of medieval commentary on the Bible and the Talmud, Rashi (1040-1105) in France and Nahmanides (1194-1270) in Spain, which remain the foundations of Biblical and Talmudic scholarship today. Using different languages and philosophical approaches, he says, they both sought to explain the literal verses of the Torah, and provide commentary with ethical, philosophical, and mystical insights that could serve as a basis for further study. He is a doctor of Jewish philosophy, and a rabbi and cantor in Maryland. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
