Political and legal scholars, most from Europe but a few from far corners of the former British Empire, evaluate whether long-standing secessionist conflicts have been addressed effectively through the significant number of self-determination settlements that were generated in response to the wave of internal conflicts during the 1990s. Each of the eight case studies involves a unit within an existing state struggling at some stage for independence, and an attempt to resolve the conflict by applying the doctrine of power sharing.
