This collection of memoirs describes the dual worlds of the woman academic of working-class background. In one, she is struggling to be accepted as a scholar and a professional and in the other, she is struggling with the sacrifices her family has made to nurture her academic bent. In the main, the 15 contributors find value in bringing elements of their working class roots into academe, including their expectations and capacity for work itself, but they find difficulty in the combined love and pain that took them from their homes to places their parents would never know or conceive of knowing. Many of the memoirs are journeys of self-discovery started after they became academics, but some are the result of a lifetime of assessment and observation, sometimes from too far, and sometimes from too close.
