This book for advanced students, clinicians, and policymakers develops a draft of an original synthetic theory of motivation in addiction called PRIME Theory, which incorporates learning through reward, punishment, and associations; feelings of compulsion and desire; and the exercise of self-control, beliefs, decisions, and plans. The authors' PRIME Theory is set within the broader context of a more general theory of behavior that examines the factors of capability, opportunity, and motivation to engage in specific behaviors. In this second edition, the authors assess PRIME Theory in light of new conceptualizations of addiction, recent literature, and new classification models since 2006. The authors consider unconventional ideas, such as changes to the DSM's diagnosis of addiction, and demonstrate how theory can change and expand in light of new evidence and research. Theory boxes throughout explain various theories and the science behind them. West and Brown teach psychology at University College London.
