Whissell (psychology, Laurentian U.) applies her work on the classification of words into categories indicating the emotions they imply to plays with high emotional content. With her Dictionary of Affect in Language as a basis, the results give fascinating insights on themes and intentions as well as characters and plot lines. Whissell describes Shakespeare's Roman tragedies, including plot outlines and previous critical approaches, then describes her approach in terms of the connotative meanings of words, people's perceptions of words and the scoring procedures. She examines the words used in the Roman dramas and compares Shakespeare's language to modern usage, then takes the measure of characters according to their use of language, developing graphics that explain the use of worlds to define emotions. She analyzes the five-act structure Shakespeare used, his sources and style, then considers the protagonists, imagery, and the plays as a whole from the perspective of her Dictionary of Affect in Language.
