Whyte (sociology, Harvard U.) examines how ordinary Chinese citizens weight the balance between a booming economy and rising inequality as they evaluate the social order. He suggests that given the changes from socialist to market economy and from modest to sizeable income gaps, people's attitude may well effect China's future political stability. Among his topics are China's post-socialist transition and rising inequality, what Chinese citizens see as fair and unfair about current inequalities, preferences for equality and inequality, and views of stratification and class conflict. His detailed survey data show that gleeful predictions that an angry populace is on the verge of overthrowing the state are just wishful thinking.
