The artificial presence of the objects visible in an image must be understood as the specific characteristic of each and every image in order for the disciplines of image studies to work with a concept of the image and its resulting relevance to the human, contends Wiesing (comparative picture theory and phenomenology, Friedrich Schiller U., Germany). He illustrates in eight essays that he wrote mostly between 2000 and 2004 and are published here for the first time. Each one links the central concept of image to an adjacent concept such as the sign, abstract photography, the window, virtual reality and immersion, mimesis, and the medium. Artifizielle Präsenze: Studien zur Philosophie des Bildes was published by Suhrkamp Verlag, Frankfurt am Main in 2005. There is no index.
