For a "brief guide," this text provides an immense amount of information in an accessible style, with readings from both academic and popular sources. Comprehensive enough to serve as a primary text yet compact enough to serve as a supplement or reference, it explains how to write the most common papers assigned in college courses: source-based essays that summarize, analyze, critique, and synthesize. Early chapters cover critical reading, with entire chapters devoted to quoting and paraphrasing, rather than just a few pages as in many other texts. Later chapters give step-by-step instructions for writing response essays, critiques, rhetorical analysis, and informative and argumentative synthesis. Summary charts of how-to instructions are included in every chapter. Final chapters cover plagiarism, documentation, citations in MLA, APA, and CSE formats, and timed writing assignments. This fifth edition includes new readings and student essays, a new chapter on reading and writing about visual texts, and updated citation guidelines. The chapter on journal writing has been removed. The book will probably work best with well-prepared, motivated students who don't need a fancy color layout to nudge them along. Wilhoit is affiliated with the University of Dayton.
