This book provides the reader with a rare glimpse of thirteenth-century life and death in a southern Ontario Iroquoian community. In 1997, the renovation of a pubic soccer field in Toronto resulted in the accidental discovery of an Iroquoian ossuary - a large pit containing the remains of at least 87 people. The pit was excavated and recorded, and the remains were re-buried in a secure location, in accordance with the wishes of the Six Nations Council of Oshweken. Detailed mapping of the skeletal remains, layer by layer, led to a reconstruction of the method and sequence of placing the bodies within the ossuary. Scientific analyses of the bones, undertaken with the permission of Six Nation as, resulted in a remarkably detailed demographic profile of the Moatfield people, along with the indicators of their health and diet. The book reports these findings in 14 chapters, and includes a complete database of maps and profiles on a CD-ROM inserted in the back cover. This is the most comprehensive analysis of an Iroquoian ossuary ever achieved and published.
