The barrow cemetery at Sutton Hoo is one of the most significant Anglo-Saxon sites in England. It has been the subject of substantial archaeological research, but less attention has been focused on why the mounds were located in what is now a remote corner of Suffolk. Williamson (English landscape history, U. of East Anglia) examines the cemetery in the context of its immediate location and its relationship to a larger number of locations connected with the ruling Wuffinga dynasty. To answer the question of why the mounds were located in that remote area, the author explores the religious beliefs and attitudes of the people who built them.
