The editors (both of the justice studies department of Mount Royal College, Canada) present a collection of ten papers that explore border security issues in the wake of the September 11th, 2001, al-Qaeda attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The countries under consideration include those mentioned by Osama Bin Laden as targets of al-Qaeda--Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Australia--as well as Iran and Austria for comparative purposes. Among the themes and subject areas that contributors were asked to address are the history of terrorism in the country; the definition of terrorism as used by the country and its relevance to border security; the handling of data on terrorism by border security organizations; the structure, organization, and operation of border security; the impact of changes to border security on the movement of citizens, foreigners, and goods; the impact of border security changes in the economic, political, social, and humanitarian lives of citizens; the impact of border security changes on the country's sense of sovereignty; and the relative importance of the al-Qaeda threat to changes in border security and impacted civil liberties and human rights.
