Wittenberg follows the heroics of Brig. General John Buford and his First Cavalry Division as they work to delay the charge of Confederate forces in the battle of Gettysburg. The author uses numerous primary source material to show a full picture of the battle, through the focused lens of this division that included mounted horsemen as well as foot soldiers. The work begins with a description of Buford as a man and as general, as well as a look at his troops. The text then delves straight into battle, and stays there for the next hundred and fifty pages or so. Included are seventeen Gettysburg maps by cartographer Phil Laino. There are also numerous photographs, both modern and contemporary to Buford's time. Of special note is the included walking and driving tour of the site, complete with GPS coordinates.
