Because most of American politics is mediated via television, newspapers, the Internet, and other media, suggests Woodward (communication studies, The College of New Jersey) it is proper to explore politics through a performative lens, in other words as a kind of theater. In chapters that individually explore the forces that shape the news business; types of discourse in the media; the presidency; congress and the courtroom; foreign news and war reporting; and the nexus between art, entertainment, and politics, a number of common themes emerge. These include the growing dependence of politicians on public relations professionals and celebrity journalists for representation of work, the staging of politics (exemplified by George W. Bush's "Mission Accomplished" landing on a US aircraft carrier), the way the media is able to set the agenda for American politics, and the harnessing of the dramatic impulse as a means of creating an alternative to the moribund state of American media politics.
