From 1997 and 2003, the World Health Organization conducted the Multicentre Growth Reference Study to develop international growth standards for children younger than five years of age. The standard was established using healthy children from diverse ethnic backgrounds living in conditions likely to favor the achievement of their full genetic growth potential, and whose mothers breast-fed them and did not smoke. The children were examined in 21 visits from birth to 24 months of age, and the standards are delineated at intervals of between and and six months, for boys and girls.
