Some African American cultural producers--such as Alice Randall, author of The Wind Done Gone (parodying Gone with the Wind); Kara Walker, who displays life-sized silhouette characters of demeaning black stereotypes in her art installations; and The Source magazine, which creates a "representation of a Hip-Hop Nation" that is male, sexist, homophobic, ethnocentric, materialistic, and violent--are increasingly appropriating negative representations of blacks in their productions and rejecting the longstanding historical black artistic traditions of racial uplift. This book analyzes these productions and explores the social, cultural, and economic factors that have led these artists to this controversial cultural strategy. It also examines the associated controversies and critiques in the context of the racial politics of the late 20th century and conducts a reception study on how cultural consumers critically negotiate the ideological messages embedded in these works.
