Kachina carvings, called Katsintithu by the Hopi people, were originally given to the young to aid in religious instruction. Presented in this volume are 85 rare, classic-era (1880s-1940s) Hopi and Zuni carved dolls from private and public collections and 30 landscape photographs that give context to the kachinas. Wright, the author of many articles and books about Puebloan culture and Hopi kachinas, supplements Portago's photographs with an essay about the systems and perceptions by which the Pueblo people negotiated their world.
