Native English speakers instinctively know that the expressions "see a point" and "take the plunge" are more idiomatic than "write a letter." From her questionnaire-based study of idiomicity from a construction grammar theoretical framework, Wulff (linguistics, U. of California, Santa Barbara) found that native speakers of a language can distinguish at least three levels of compositionality that determine how idiomatic language constructions are considered. Appendices include her study questionnaire; Barkema-based and entrophy-based flexibility values for tree-syntactic, lexico-syntactic, and morphological flexibility; results for compositionality; formal flexibility parameters and their parameter levels with examples; and graphs of the correlation between the two measures of flexibility. This volume is based on the author's PhD thesis at the U. of Bremen, Germany, 2006. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
