Wurdinger and Carlson (both experiential education and leadership studies, Minnesota State U., Mankato) offer educators a concise introduction to the use of experiential learning methods in K-12, higher education, and adult classrooms. An opening chapter discussing the need for experiential learning is followed by chapters on active learning, problem-based and inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, service-learning, place-based learning, and concluding remarks on assessment. The authors provide an effective overview of the theoretical support for each of the five methods along with practical explanations and examples of how to incorporate them into the classroom. For readers with little or no experience with experiential learning, the text would be enhanced by inclusion of a subject index. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
