Jefferson's public papers begins with A Summary View of the Rights of British America of 1774. They proceed to the Declaration of Independence, a bill arguing for religious freedom, and two inaugural addresses. Excerpts from his 1782 book Notes on Virginia include commentary on immigration, Indian rights, constitutional government, slavery, and agrarian virtue. Then comes his correspondence with a Portuguese botanist, a future billionaire, and his friend and rival John Adams, with whom he debates Theognis. He never met a drunk Frenchman, he appreciated the strategic importance of new Orleans, and he had ideas, plenty of them, on female education. Knowing the probable course of his ill health as a scientist, he asks James Madison to take care of his legacy after his death. Here Yarbrough (social sciences and government, Bowdoin College) takes the best from the best and also offers a well-reasoned introduction and meaningful notes.
