The study or women and gender often involves cross-cultural comparisons that are hampered by an inability to track down sources of information. In this bibliography, Yates (history and East Asian Studies, McGill University) has gathered a bibliography of hundreds of articles from European and North American journals as well as a number of full-length books. Most of them are in English, including several in Chinese language publications. The authors are arranged alphabetically with a separate section for unpublished dissertations. The index contains the names of the authors grouped according to topic. This is an immensely useful volume. Yates states that he plans to update the bibliography each year in the journal Nan Nü: Men Women and Gender in China.
