Mainstream thinking about changes in the balance of world power typically leaves out population, one of the primary components of power. And, as the authors contend, studies that do address international security and demographic shifts generally consider population growth as a detriment. Their argument is that the opposite is true: population decline in world powers are a serious threat to world stability. Further, they say, countries in the developed world are facing the most risk as birthrates drop and populations grow older --translating into a loss of human capital to support and contribute to their economy, provide military personnel, and maintain a place among the ranks of world powers. Editors Yoshihara (International Organizations Research Group), Sylva (Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute), and eight security experts contributed to the book.
