The 100th was made up mostly of American of Japanese ancestry, with a few men from Hawaii. A Lutheran pastor from rural eastern Pennsylvania, Yost (1916-2000) served as chaplain for the battalion for all but the first week of its combat in Italy and France. He recounts the experience, jogging his memory with the almost daily letters he sent his wife, the journal he kept part of the time, and accounts he had read and heard over the subsequent 40 years.
