Since emerging as a genre in the 1960s, young adult (YA) fiction has helped adolescents negotiate the social and sexual standards of the dominant culture. In this engaging study, Younger (English and Women's Studies, Drake University) examines how the common representations of young women in YA fiction reinforce and complicate cultural assumptions and social constraints. Each chapter analyzes a recurrent theme in YA literature, including issues of body image, pregnancy, abortion, lesbianism, and romance. The author examines selected novels for their sexual content, situating each novel within its social and historical context and analyzing its discursive qualities. She then uses this analysis to reveal the complex ways in which society depicts teenagers and their sexualities, and she offers a feminist critique of patriarchal culture that gives value to the female experience.
