Yousman (communication, U. of Massachusetts-Amherst) examines television representation of prisons within a critical framework drawing from sociology, communication, and philosophy theory. His analysis measures Hollywood's depiction against the realities of US prisons by way of interviews with people who have spent real time inside them. He also discusses worldwide consumption of those depictions and the social construction of fear, lack of coverage of US prisons in local television news, and the racially-defined nature of the prison system. The final chapter discusses the popular HBO series Oz and the implications of its content and its legitimization of the horrors of prison life. This book may interest students in media criticism, media literacy, popular culture, television studies, and criminology. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
