According to the editors Cao (philosophy, Boston University) Zhong (Asian language and literature, Tufts University) and Liao (Chinese, Beijing University) in its rush toward cultural change and westernization, the Chinese were inclined to throw the baby out with the bathwater, rejecting traditional cultural beliefs. The essays in this volume, which came from two conferences held in China is 2004 and 2005, reflect upon this opinion. The first section looks at how Confucianism and Daoism are being adapted to current situations. The second section discusses internal changes in China and problems encountered in the modernization process. The final section is a blending of viewpoints on the impact of history on China today, including Revolutionary goals, the transitional years under Deng Xiaopeng and even a commentary on two of the papers in the current volume. The material here is complex and, in many cases, requires some knowledge of recent events in China. The articles are worth the effort, though. Reading the decidedly non-western based analyses will open the way for westerners to gain a greater understanding of contemporary China. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
