In an impassioned, well-documented history of ROC Taiwan as a constitutional democracy, Yu (Ming Chuan University, Taiwan, ROC) uses the "long march" as a metaphor for the struggle of the Chinese in Taiwan to maintain their independence and recognition as the only democratic government for all of China. He starts with the background before and during World War II on the mainland and then switches to a history of the ROC government under the constitution and how it has been that which has ensured the survival of the country, despite occasional weak or corrupt leaders. Yu also follows the delicate international diplomacy that the Republic of China has managed. The information and point of view are valuable to students of the region and political sociologists. It would have been useful if a native English speaker had done a final edit, however, for too often the sentence construction and word choice are confusing.
