Yung (American studies, U. of California-Santa Cruz) presents a memoir of her husband, Eddie Fung (1922- ), the only Chinese American soldier to be captured by the Japanese during WWII. Research for the book was begun in the summer of 2002, when the author was put in contact with Fung while gathering information for another book on Chinese Americans; the interviews went so well they were married the following spring. The text draws upon numerous hours of interviews Yung conducted with Fung, and other published accounts and oral histories, to create a collaborative life history project and autobiography describing Fung's childhood growing up in San Francisco's Chinatown, two years spent as a cowboy in Texas in the late-30s, and his POW experience during WWII. Academic but accessible to the general reader. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
